MBA Colleges Under ₹5 Lakh in India: 44 Colleges, and Where the Money Goes Furthest
Our directory has 46 entries with a total two-year fee of ₹5 lakh or less. Two of them (CUSAT and GGSIPU) appear under two names each, so that is 44 distinct institutes. The cheapest is Jamia Millia Islamia at ₹0.5 lakh and the dearest is PIMR Indore at ₹5 lakh. Half of them cost ₹2.55 lakh or less. 28 admit from around a 55 percentile or lower and do not rely on CAT alone, so a low score is not the barrier here. The barrier is the entrance route, and whether a higher fee in this range actually buys anything.

Cheapest first. Total two-year programme fee excluding hostel. CTC ÷ fee is average placement divided by the whole fee. n/a means the institute publishes no figure we could source.
How the fees are spread
Most of the list sits at the cheap end. If you only have a rough budget in mind, this is the useful way to read it:
| Total fee | Colleges | Typical profile |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹2 lakh | 17 | University departments and state institutes. See the full ₹2 lakh list. |
| ₹2 to ₹3 lakh | 16 | Mix of university departments (CUSAT, Pune, Hyderabad) and private colleges in Maharashtra and Gujarat. |
| ₹3 to ₹5 lakh | 13 | NITs and IIT (ISM) with CAT-only entry, plus a mix of private and university programmes in Mumbai, Delhi, Indore, Vadodara, Guwahati and Kanpur. |
Of the 46 entries, 33 cost ₹3 lakh or less. Going from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh adds only 13 colleges, and as the next sections show, the extra money does not always buy a better outcome.
Who actually gets in at a low percentile
The CAT band in the table is where admitted students tend to land, not a cut-off. Reading it across the list:
- 29 entries have bands that start at 55 percentile or lower. One of them, TBS Jammu, lists CAT as its only test. The other 28 also take CMAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA or a state test.
- 9 entries start at 75 percentile or higher: DBE Delhi, MANIT Bhopal, IM BHU, SMS Hyderabad, UBS Chandigarh, NIT Trichy, MNIT Jaipur, NIT Calicut and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. They are cheap because they are public institutions, and they are not options for a 50 percentile.
- The rest sit in between, mostly 50 to 70, and include AMU Aligarh, AIM Guwahati, PIMR Indore and the GGSIPU schools in Delhi.
If your score is low, the practical shortlist is the first group. Use the college predictor with your percentile and a ₹5 lakh fee limit to see which of these fall in the comfortable, likely or stretch zone.
Which test each one actually wants
For a college to be cheap and open to you, you need to have sat the right exam. From the directory’s test column:
- CAT is the only listed test (11): DBE Delhi, AMU Aligarh, MANIT Bhopal, TBS Jammu, SMS Hyderabad, UBS Chandigarh, NIT Trichy, MNIT Jaipur, NITK Surathkal, NIT Calicut and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
- Maharashtra, MAH-CET (8): DIEMS, DAIMSR, SIOM, CSIBER, MET Nashik, PUMBA, LLIM and MET Mumbai. Most also take CMAT, XAT, MAT or ATMA.
- Uttar Pradesh (9 entries): a mix of CUET-PG, UPTAC, MAT and CAT, plus GMAT at IM BHU. See MBA colleges in Uttar Pradesh.
- Kerala: KMAT and CMAT for CUSAT and IMK Trivandrum.
- Delhi: IPU CET and CMAT for the GGSIPU schools. DBE Delhi and Jamia are separate processes.
- CMAT shows up for 26 of the 46, more than any other national test, which is why it matters even if you are strongest at CAT.
Some of these processes closed months ago and the next window opens late in the year. The state test calendar and our exams still open page show what you can still sit for, and the CMAT-accepting colleges page lists the CMAT route in detail. Many Gujarat colleges admit through ACPC counselling; confirm the route with the college before you plan around any single test.
Does paying more get you more?
Divide the average placement by the whole two-year fee and the pattern is clear. The highest ratios in this list are DBE Delhi at 15.10, FMS MSU Baroda at 9.12, BK School at 6.37, AMU Aligarh at 6.00 and BBAU Lucknow at 5.00, and every one of them costs ₹1.0 lakh or less.
The lowest are mostly private colleges costing ₹2.6 to ₹5 lakh: CSJMU Kanpur at 0.91, CSIBER at 1.15, GGSIPU at 1.17, PIMR Indore at 1.20 and Parul at 1.30. These ratios use each institute’s own published average, so they are a guide and not a verdict, and a Mumbai or Delhi location can matter for jobs in ways the ratio does not capture. But if two colleges admit you at the same score, the cheaper one is usually the better first look.
Two cautions. 9 of the 46 publish no average placement we could source, so for them n/a means unknown, not zero. And averages hide the spread: ask each college for its median and for how many students actually sat the process.
What the fee does not include
A total fee of ₹4 lakh is the programme fee. Hostel, mess, exam and registration fees, books and travel are on top, and in a big city the living cost over two years can approach the tuition. Colleges also revise fees year by year; see what happened across our directory in MBA fees in 2026 before assuming last year’s number holds.
Before you apply
- Fix your budget first. Add hostel and living costs to the fee and decide the total you can fund without a loan you cannot repay.
- Find the test. Confirm which exam the college uses and when its next window opens.
- Check approval. Look up the college on AICTE and UGC before you pay an application or seat fee.
- Ask for last year’s numbers. Closing percentile, number of seats, and a placement report with the median, not only the highest package.
- Pay only through the institute. Never pay a counsellor or agent for a seat. Read how admission agent fraud works.
Questions people ask
Which is the cheapest MBA college in India?
In our directory it is Jamia Millia Islamia (Centre for Management Studies), New Delhi, at a total programme fee of ₹0.5 lakh, excluding hostel. Fees change every year, so confirm with the department.
How many MBA colleges are under ₹5 lakh?
Our directory has 46 entries at or below a total fee of ₹5 lakh, which is 44 distinct institutes because CUSAT and GGSIPU are each listed under two names.
Can I get an MBA under ₹5 lakh with a 50 percentile?
Yes, in many cases. 29 of the 46 entries have bands that start at 55 percentile or lower, and 28 of those also take tests other than CAT. A band is where admitted students land, not a guarantee, so check each college’s cut-off and process.
Are MBA colleges under ₹5 lakh good?
Quality varies. Several public institutes post strong placement against fee, such as DBE Delhi, FMS MSU Baroda and AMU Aligarh. Judge a college by its approval, placement report and the process that gets you in, not by the fee alone.
Do these fees include hostel?
No. They are total two-year programme fees excluding hostel, mess and living costs.
Before you pay anything: check that the college is AICTE-approved and know the refund rules.
