MBA Under ₹2 Lakh in India: 17 Colleges, and the Catch

Updated 5 October 2026 · Total two-year programme fees, hostel not included · From our 197-college directory

The short version

Our directory lists 17 MBA programmes with a total two-year fee of ₹2 lakh or less, from ₹0.5 lakh at Jamia Millia Islamia to ₹2 lakh at SRLIM. They are mostly university and institute departments, and the catch is how you get in: 12 of the 17 fill seats through a state or university-level test rather than CAT alone, and 4 admit around 60 percentile or higher.

Cheapest first. Total two-year programme fee excluding hostel. CTC ÷ fee is average placement divided by the whole fee.

Cheap isn’t the same as easy

The cheapest seat is not the easiest one. Sorting the 17 by the percentile band where they actually admit gives three groups:

  • Bands that start at 40 (8): BK School, FMS MSU Baroda, CCSU Meerut, DoMS Anna University, KIMS Dharwad, DIEMS, DAIMSR, SRLIM.
  • Bands that start at 50 (5): BBAU Lucknow, MLSU Udaipur, University of Lucknow, MMMUT Gorakhpur, TBS Jammu.
  • Bands that start at 60 or higher (4): Jamia Millia Islamia (65–80), DBE Delhi (90–95), AMU Aligarh (60–75), MANIT Bhopal (80–90).

A band is where admitted students actually land, not a guarantee that a given score gets you in. But the pattern is clear. The cheapest of all, Jamia at ₹0.5 lakh, admits at 65 to 80, and the best return on the list, Delhi University’s DBE, admits in the 90s. The colleges that realistically take a 40 to 55 score start at ₹0.8 lakh.

Which test actually gets you in

For these colleges, the fee is the easy part. Our directory shows 4 where CAT is the listed route, 1 that take only national tests (XAT, CMAT or MAT), and 12 that name a state or university-level test:

  • CAT is the listed route: DBE Delhi, AMU Aligarh, MANIT Bhopal, TBS Jammu.
  • CUET-PG: BBAU Lucknow, MLSU Udaipur, University of Lucknow, CCSU Meerut, MMMUT Gorakhpur. UPTAC also appears for CCSU Meerut and MMMUT Gorakhpur.
  • Maharashtra’s MAH-CET: DIEMS, DAIMSR.
  • Tamil Nadu’s TANCET: DoMS Anna University. Karnataka: KIMS Dharwad (PGCET and KMAT).
  • Gujarat’s centralised counselling: BK School, FMS MSU Baroda, SRLIM.

Almost all of these state processes finished months ago, so this is a plan for next year, not this month. The state test calendar shows what ran when in 2026. Some state systems also favour candidates from the state, so check domicile rules before the fee tempts you. Where the table names a test you haven’t heard of, that is the test to find out about first.

What you get for the money

Divide the average placement by the whole two-year fee and the cheapest colleges look very good. DBE Delhi at 15.10; FMS MSU Baroda at 9.12; BK School at 6.37; AMU Aligarh at 6.00; BBAU Lucknow at 5.00. A ratio of 6, for instance, means the average annual package is six times the entire fee for the course.

Two cautions. 5 of the 17 publish no placement figure in our data, so for them “n/a” means unknown, not zero. And the figures are the institutes’ own averages, so treat them as a guide and ask each department for its placement report.

If ₹2 lakh is too tight

Stretch the ceiling to ₹3 lakh and the list grows to 33 colleges in our directory. The lowest-fee list has the ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh tiers side by side, and the ROI index ranks every college by placement against fee.

Before you apply

  1. Find the test. Look up which test the college actually uses and when its next window opens.
  2. Check domicile and seat rules. Public institutions reserve seats under state or central rules, so ask for the seat matrix.
  3. Add the real cost. The fee excludes hostel and living costs, which can be a large share of what you’ll really spend.
  4. Confirm recognition. Check AICTE approval and, for a university programme, UGC recognition, before you pay anything.

Questions people ask

Which is the cheapest MBA college in India?

In our directory it is Jamia Millia Islamia (Centre for Management Studies Jamia Millia Islamia), New Delhi, at a total programme fee of ₹0.5 L, excluding hostel. Fees change every year, so confirm with the department.

Can I get an MBA under ₹2 lakh with a 50 percentile?

Possibly. 13 of the 17 colleges have bands starting at 40 to 55 percentile, but most need a state or university-level test rather than CAT alone, so check each college’s route first.

Are MBA colleges under ₹2 lakh any good?

Several post strong returns on the fee: DBE Delhi at 15.10 and FMS MSU Baroda at 9.12 in our data. Judge each by its placement report and recognition, not the fee alone.

Do these fees include hostel?

No. They are total two-year programme fees excluding hostel and living costs.

Before you pay anything: check that the college is AICTE-approved and know the refund rules.
