Fewer CAT Applicants in 2026: Will Low-Percentile MBA Cut-Offs Actually Drop?

12 October 2026 · Based on press-reported registration figures · Appeared count not yet known

The honest answer

Maybe a little, and only outside the IIMs. CAT 2026 registrations are reported at about 2.84 lakh, down 3.73% from 2025 and about 13.7% from 2024. That is a modest change against a fixed number of seats, so expect IIM cut-offs to barely move. Non-IIM and state-level colleges that take lower percentiles may see slightly softer competition, but nobody can promise a lower cut-off yet.

What actually changed

CATRegisteredPer IIM seat (8,284)
20243.29 lakhabout 40
20252.95 lakhabout 36
2026about 2.84 lakh (press report)about 34

The seat figure is a sum of the 22 IIMs’ intake over the last three years, so treat the ratio as a rough guide, not a published statistic. Even so, the move from about 36 to about 34 candidates per seat is small. For the full numbers and their sources, see CAT 2026 registrations.

Why the IIMs will barely notice

IIM shortlists are built from score and profile cut-offs set on very high percentiles, a band where a few thousand fewer registrants changes little. If you are in the 95-plus group the competition is roughly what it was last year. If you are not, this section is not about your options.

Where a smaller pool could matter

Colleges that accept CAT in the 40 to 80 percentile range compete for applicants as much as applicants compete for them. A smaller pool can mean slightly fewer people clearing their cut-off, and some seats go unfilled and reach spot rounds; we explain how that works in MBA spot rounds and vacant seats. It does not mean a college lowers its published cut-off. Colleges decide that after counselling, and many do not publish it at all.

What a smaller N does to your percentile

This part is mechanical. Percentile is ((N − rank) ÷ N) × 100, where N is the number who appeared. If fewer people appear, the same rank maps to a slightly higher percentile. Your rank and score do not improve, and college cut-offs that were set on last year’s percentiles may shift in the other direction. Use the rank to percentile calculator with different values of N, and read how normalisation changes your marks before you compare your score with last year’s.

What to do in each percentile band

Your likely bandWhat the drop changesWhere to look
Below 50Little. Your options depend on other exams and direct college criteria.40 to 50 percentile, MBA without CAT
50 to 70Possibly a few more open seats at colleges you can already reach.50 to 60, 60 to 70
70 to 90Mostly unchanged. Percentile shifts of a point or two matter more than the applicant count.70 to 80, 80 to 90
90 and aboveEssentially nothing.90 to 95

Do not pay anyone because of this news

Headlines about “easier admission” are exactly what admission agents use to sell guaranteed seats. No agent can promise one, and a college cannot lawfully sell a seat outside its counselling process. Read how admission agent fraud works and how to check AICTE approval before you pay any deposit.

A sensible plan until the result

  1. Keep a second exam alive. Registration for NMAT is reported open to 25 October, and MAT, CMAT and ATMA cover more colleges.
  2. Build a shortlist by fee and percentile, not by the news. Start with low-fee MBA colleges accepting CAT.
  3. Download your admit card when it opens (4 November) and note the result date once announced (what is official so far).
  4. Recheck this page after 29 November. Once the appeared count is public, we will replace the estimates with the real N.

Frequently asked questions

Will CAT cut-offs fall because registrations dropped in 2026?

Probably not at the IIMs, where cut-offs follow seats and the top of the score distribution. A smaller pool can help at non-IIM colleges that compete for applicants, but nothing published yet shows by how much.

Does a lower N make my percentile higher?

For the same rank, yes. Percentile is ((N − rank) ÷ N) × 100 and N is the number who appeared, so fewer test-takers push a given rank to a slightly higher percentile. The rank itself does not change.

Is it easier to get an MBA seat with a 50 percentile in 2027?

Not reliably. A 50 percentile opens a wider set of colleges than a 90 does, but admission still depends on each college’s own cut-off, interview and fees. Use the percentile band pages and verify each college’s current notice.

When will the CAT 2026 appeared number be known?

After the 29 November 2026 exam. The result date is not announced yet; see our result-date page for what is official and what is likely.
