How to read your percentile
Three things change the answer for the same percentile. Category: CAP 2026 shortlisted General at 95 but OBC/EWS at 81, SC at 66 and ST/PwD at 42 — a 70-percentile SC candidate has IIM calls a 90-percentile General candidate does not. Floor vs convert: a published 80 at an IIT is an eligibility floor; the real converting percentile can be 92+. Profile weight: below 80 percentile, the interview and academics carry 45–70% of the composite at most colleges, so a 65 with 80% academics beats a 72 with 55%.
Alternate exams by band
- 40–60: MAT and CMAT are the standard back-ups; state CETs (MAH-CET, KMAT, TANCET, TS-ICET) are the shortcut into city colleges. See direct MBA admission without CAT.
- 60–80: XAT mirrors the CAT floor at most colleges; CMAT/MAT floors are usually higher than CAT here, so a 62 CAT is often the easier ticket.
- 80–90: XAT, GMAT and NMAT open the same AACSB schools; SNAP (SIBM), MICAT (MICA) and IBSAT (IBS) are separate routes.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CAT percentile for MBA admission?
For the older IIMs, 98–99+; for the new IIMs, 92–95 in General category (81 for OBC/EWS, 66 for SC, 42 for ST/PwD via CAP 2026). For AACSB-accredited private schools like IMI Delhi, TAPMI and GIM, 80–90. For NIRF top-100 private colleges like IMI Kolkata, Jaipuria and Nirma, 70–80. Nine NIRF-ranked colleges still admit at 60–70, and credible AICTE-approved options exist all the way down to 40.
Which college can I get with 50 percentile in CAT?
NDIM Delhi (NIRF 86), Jaipuria Jaipur (NIRF 74), IPE Hyderabad, SIES Navi Mumbai, Apeejay Delhi, SCMS Cochin, SSN Chennai, AIMS Bangalore and about ten more AICTE-approved colleges admit in the 50–60 band. See our full 50–60 percentile list for fees and placements.
Can I get an MBA college with 40 percentile in CAT?
Yes — BIT Mesra sets its eligibility floor at 40 percentile, and Globsyn Kolkata, ISBR Bangalore (PGDM), Jaipuria Indore, ABS Noida and EMPI Delhi admit in the 40–50 band. Most also accept MAT and CMAT, which are the usual back-up routes.
What percentile is needed for IIT MBA?
Qualifying floors are 80 (IIT Kanpur, Jodhpur, ISM Dhanbad) to 85 (IIT Madras) for General candidates, but final converts at Madras and Kanpur land around 92–96. IIT Jodhpur and IIT ISM Dhanbad genuinely close in the 80–85 band; reserved-category floors are 50–64.
How much does the CAT score matter compared to the interview?
At IIMs, CAT is 30–40% of the final composite. At tier-2 and tier-3 private colleges it is 20–45%, with the interview/GD/WAT carrying 30–45% and academics 10–20%. Below 80 percentile, the interview and your academic record decide more than the score does.
CAT 2026 dates that matter now: correction window, admit card (4 November), registrations and the exams still open after CAT.

Cutoffs differ by category; see OBC-NCL, SC and ST CAT cutoffs explained.

Sources & methodology
Cutoffs are published shortlisting percentiles or the band in which the institute actually admits students; fees are total 2-year programme fees (hostel excluded unless stated); placement figures are the latest institute-reported averages. Cross-checked against NIRF 2025 and the portals below on 4 September 2026. Always confirm with the institute’s current admission brochure before paying any fee.
