MBA Colleges Accepting 80–90 Percentile in CAT 2026 (MBA 2027): IITs, IIMs for Reserved Categories & Top Private B-Schools

Last updated: 18 October 2026 (CAT 2026, NMAT and XAT dates and NIRF 2026 status re-checked; college data verified 4 September 2026) · CAT 2025 scores → MBA/PGDM 2026-28 batch · Reviewed by the bestmbacollegeswithlowcatscore.com editorial team

Quick answer

An 80–90 percentile in CAT 2025 puts four IIT MBA programmes (Madras, Kanpur, Jodhpur, ISM Dhanbad), IIFM Bhopal and DTU within reach, opens the newer IIMs for OBC/EWS (81+) and SC/ST/PwD candidates, and clears the floor at AACSB-accredited private schools like IMI Delhi, TAPMI, GIM, Great Lakes, FORE and KJ Somaiya. Government fees run ₹3–12 lakh with ₹10–18 LPA averages; top private schools charge ₹19–24 lakh for ₹14–19 LPA.

CAT 2026 cycle note (12 October 2026). The college data below comes from CAT 2025 scores and was last verified on 4 September 2026. CAT 2026 registrations are reported at about 2.84 lakh against 2.95 lakh last year, a small drop. For N between roughly 2.49 and 2.58 lakh, a 80–90 percentile is about rank 24,900 to 51,600 (an estimate: CAT publishes percentile, not rank; the real N is known only after the 29 November exam). The applicant count changes little in this band. Reserved-category cut-offs and normalisation matter more; read how normalisation changes your marks before comparing with last year. More in will fewer CAT applicants lower MBA cut-offs and the rank to percentile calculator.

Eighty to ninety is the band where the advice you get depends on who is selling to you. Coaching sites tell you to retake for the IIMs; consultancies push ₹20-lakh private seats. The honest answer sits in between and depends on your category and profile. Below is the verified 2026-28 map: which IITs and IIMs are realistic and for whom, which private B-schools actually shortlist at 80–90, and what each costs against what its graduates earn.

IIM figures are CAP 2026 (CAT 2025) shortlist floors; non-CAP IIM figures are the previous cycle’s and may move. IIT “qualifying” cutoffs are floors — final converted percentiles at Madras/Kanpur are 92–96.
Floor vs. convert: a published 80 or 85 at an IIT means you are eligible to be considered, not that you will be shortlisted. IIT Jodhpur, IIT ISM Dhanbad, IIFM and DTU genuinely close at 80–85; IIT Madras and Kanpur do not in General category. Plan accordingly.

Cutoffs are institute-published shortlisting percentiles for 2026-28 via Careers360, MBAUniverse, Collegedunia and CollegeDekho. Fees exclude hostel unless stated.
Excluded on purpose: SIBM Pune (SNAP only, does not accept CAT), MICA (CAT/XAT ~85 floor but selects via MICAT), IIM Mumbai (85 qualifying floor but converts ~97+). NIRF 2026 had not been released as of 18 October 2026, later than its usual August–September slot, so the ranks shown are NIRF 2025. Recheck them once the 2026 list is out.

Reserved-category candidates: this is your IIM band

For CAT 2025, CAP 2026 shortlisted NC-OBC and EWS at 81 percentile (79 for women), SC at 66 and ST/PwD at 42, with sectional minimums of roughly 72 (OBC/EWS), 45 (SC) and 25–30 (ST/PwD). IIM Visakhapatnam shortlisted OBC/EWS at 72 and SC at 50. If you are OBC/EWS above 81 or SC/ST/PwD anywhere in this band, the IIMs and IITs should be your first applications — a ₹17-lakh IIM fee with a ₹14–16 LPA average is a materially better outcome than most private options below, and IIT fees are a fraction of that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an IIM with 85 percentile in CAT?

In the General category, practically no. CAP 2026 (IIM Jammu, Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur and partners) shortlisted General candidates at 95 (93 for women), and IIM Visakhapatnam’s 82 shortlist floor converted around 92–94. For EWS and NC-OBC candidates at 81+ and SC candidates at 66+, CAP does issue calls — so 85 is a genuine IIM shot if you are in a reserved category. Otherwise target IIT Kanpur, Jodhpur, ISM Dhanbad and IIFM.

Is 88 percentile enough for IMT Ghaziabad?

Borderline. IMT Ghaziabad’s published expectation is 90–95 percentile; an 88 can get a call only with strong work experience and academics, or via a higher XAT or GMAT score. Safer near-equivalents at 85–88 are IMI Delhi, GIM Goa, Great Lakes Chennai, TAPMI and FORE.

Which are the best colleges for exactly 80–85 percentile?

TAPMI Manipal (80–85), IMI Delhi’s composite floor (80), LIBA Chennai (80–85), Welingkar Mumbai flagship (80), LBSIM Delhi (80–85), IFMR GSB (≈80), IIFM Bhopal (80), IIT Jodhpur and IIT ISM Dhanbad (80–85 qualifying), IMI Kolkata, MDI Murshidabad and BIMTECH (75–80).

Is an IIT MBA realistic at 80–90 percentile?

Partly. The 80/85 figures at IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are qualifying cutoffs; their final shortlists land around 92–96. IIT Jodhpur and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad genuinely close in the 80–85 range, with fees of ₹3–8.4 lakh and averages of ₹10–11 LPA — the best return on investment in this band.

Which 80–90 percentile college has the best fee-to-salary ratio?

Government first: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (≈₹3.9 L → ₹10.5 LPA), DSM DTU (₹4.8 L → ₹10.3 LPA), IIT Kanpur (≈₹7 L → ₹17.2 LPA) and IIFM (₹11.8 L → ₹10 LPA) beat every private school. Among private B-schools, IMI Delhi (₹23.5 L → ₹17.9 LPA), Great Lakes (₹21.6 L → ₹17.8 LPA) and IMI Kolkata (₹15–16.8 L → ₹12.75 LPA) lead.

Is it too late to add a second exam for the 2027-29 batch?

No. As of 18 October 2026, GMAC lists 25 October as the last date to register for NMAT, with tests from 2 November to 20 December. XAT 2027 registration runs to 6 December for the 3 January exam, as listed by Careers360. NMAT opens KJ Somaiya, Welingkar and IFMR; XAT opens XIMB, IMI, GIM and TAPMI. CAT 2026 registration closed on 22 September.
