CAT Rank vs College 2026: What Your CAT Rank Actually Gets You

Last updated: 24 September 2026 · CAT 2025 scores → MBA/PGDM 2026-28 batch · Reviewed by the bestmbacollegeswithlowcatscore.com editorial team

Quick answer

CAT 2025 had roughly 2.58 lakh candidates appear, so percentile = ((2,58,000 − your rank) ÷ 2,58,000) × 100. A 10,000 rank is about 96.1 percentile; 50,000 is about 80.6; 1,00,000 is about 61.2. Every rank band below links to the colleges that actually admit at that level.

CAT rank — definition

Your CAT rank is your position among all candidates who appeared, ordered by CAT score — rank 1 is the highest score. It is not the same as percentile: percentile shows the share of candidates you outscored. CAT stands for Common Admission Test; “CAT rank” has no separate full form.

CAT 2026 note: registrations are reported at about 2.84 lakh (Indian Express via Careers360, October 2026), against 2.95 lakh in 2025. Those are registrations, not candidates who appeared. The appeared count (N) is only known after the 29 November 2026 exam, so the table below uses the 2.58 lakh who appeared in CAT 2025. When the 2026 N is published, the percentile for a given rank will shift slightly.

What is a good rank in CAT?

It depends on the college you are aiming for. Using the table below: a rank near 10,000 (about 96 percentile) is the range for the older IIMs and FMS; near 1,00,000 (about 61 percentile) opens colleges such as NDIM and Jaipuria; near 1,50,000 (about 42 percentile) opens institutes such as BIT Mesra, Globsyn and ISBR, plus state-quota MBAs. Rank alone is never the admission criterion — see the FAQ below.

The IIMs publish a percentile, not a rank, so most candidates convert one to the other themselves and get it wrong. The table below applies the official CAT percentile definition to the CAT 2025 candidate count, then maps each rank to the colleges that admit in that band.

Percentiles are computed from the official CAT formula against 2.58 lakh candidates who appeared for CAT 2025 (about 87 per cent of 2.95 lakh registered). The IIMs publish no rank-vs-percentile table, so treat these as accurate to roughly ±0.1 percentile.

How the conversion works

CAT percentile is defined as P = ((N − r) ÷ N) × 100, where N is the number of candidates who appeared and r is your rank. The formula checks out against the published CAT 2025 result counts: it predicts 12 candidates at 100 percentile and 26 each at 99.99 and 99.98, which is exactly what was reported. That pins N to roughly 2.56–2.60 lakh.

Sectional rank matters too. Every IIM and most top private schools apply sectional minimums alongside the overall percentile. A strong overall rank with a weak VARC or QA section can still miss a shortlist, so check sectional cutoffs before assuming your rank is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is CAT rank?

Your CAT rank is your position among all candidates who appeared, ordered by CAT score, with rank 1 the highest. CAT stands for Common Admission Test. Institutes shortlist on percentile, not rank.

What is the difference between CAT rank and percentile?

Rank is your position in the list of candidates who appeared; percentile is the share of those candidates you outscored, calculated as ((N − rank) ÷ N) × 100 where N is the number who appeared.

How many candidates registered for CAT 2026?

About 2.84 lakh had registered, per a press report in October 2026, against 2.95 lakh in 2025. Registrations are not the number who appear; in 2025 about 2.58 lakh appeared.

What is a good rank in CAT?

It depends on the target: about 10,000 rank is roughly 96 percentile (older IIMs), about 1,00,000 is roughly 61 percentile (colleges such as NDIM and Jaipuria), about 1,50,000 is roughly 42 percentile (colleges such as BIT Mesra and ISBR).

What percentile is a 20,000 rank in CAT?

About 92.2 percentile, using the official CAT formula against the roughly 2.58 lakh candidates who appeared for CAT 2025. That is enough for the newer IIMs in reserved categories, IIM Visakhapatnam’s 82-percentile shortlist, XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad and the AACSB private schools.

Is a 50,000 rank in CAT good?

It maps to roughly 80.6 percentile. It closes the General-category IIM door but opens IIT ISM Dhanbad, IIT Jodhpur, IIFM Bhopal, IMI Delhi’s floor, TAPMI, Welingkar, JIMS Rohini and around twenty other credible institutes — several of them NIRF top-100.

Can I get an MBA with a 1 lakh rank in CAT?

Yes. A 1,00,000 rank is about 61.2 percentile, which clears the published floor at NDIM, Jaipuria, IPE Hyderabad, SIES, Christ University, IMI Bhubaneswar and dozens more. It will not clear an IIM in the General category.

Does CAT rank or percentile matter for admission?

Percentile. Every institute publishes cutoffs in percentile terms and none shortlists on rank. Rank is useful only as a way of understanding where you sit in the cohort.

Cutoffs are the published shortlisting percentile where the institute publishes one, and otherwise the band in which it actually admits, taken from institute disclosures and the portals below. Fees are total two-year programme fees excluding hostel unless stated; placement figures are the latest institute-reported averages. Cross-checked against NIRF 2025 on 4 September 2026. Always confirm against the institute’s current admission brochure before paying any fee.
